Our Journey

Cartrefi was established as a not-for-profit charity in 1989 by a group of parents and activists who sought to ensure that people with learning disabilities living in rural Wales and the Valleys had access to the highest quality of support in their local communities.

Our journey

Their aim was to create a Wales-based agency that understood and engaged with the unique needs of Wales’ diverse communities and institutions. At that time, the priority was to enable individuals to move away from large institutions and receive support closer to their roots. Accommodation was typically provided by housing associations, while Cartrefi focused on delivering support to help people live fulfilling lives in a homely environment.

The vision of our founders remains at the heart of our work today. We continue to primarily operate in rural Wales and the Valleys, supporting people with learning disabilities and helping them live as tenants of housing associations.

However, we have not remained static. Our commitment to quality has positioned us as leading practitioners of Active Support, Positive Behavioural Support, and Autism-Sensitive Support. We offer flexible, sessional support for individuals with or without learning disabilities, and we take great pride in our innovative work with older people.

In 2016, we became a co-operative, empowering the people we support, our employees, and community supporters to co-produce our future. We are excited to embark on this new era together.
